"Barack Obama is President today because of stupid, ignorant people like you!" answers Rush. "It doesn't surprise me that you're the kind of Republican that our last candidate attracted because you're no Republican at all!"
Mancow gets wet again over Same-Sex marriage. Actually, she was slightly more tame than last week when she reported on Iowa's Supreme Court Ruling. Surprisingly, she did not take the opportunity to whack President Bush.
Vermont is one of the wackiest places in the universe, so this is not surprising.
U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, (R-Saks) used a day of his two-week break from his congressional duties in Washington, D.C. to drop in on a few of his constituents at Auburn University Montgomery.
AUM and the main campus of Auburn University are both in congressional District 3, which Rogers represents.
Rogers talked a bit about the economy, the war and homeland security. But some of the most interesting comments he had to make (at least in this reporter's humble opinion) were about how Congressional Democrats were wielding their new majority in Congress.
Despite President Barack Obama's commitment to bipartisanship, Rogers says Speaker of House Nancy Pelosi (whom he described as "crazy," "mean as a snake" and "Tom DeLay in a skirt") and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid didn't get that memo.
"They don't talk to us," he said. "They've got the vote, and they can do what they want."
Minnesota U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann points out Obama's $3.6 trillion budget triples the national debt within a decade, which is why she adamantly opposes it. She tells Newsmax TV Obama's "cap and trade" is really a tax on everyone for the use of energy. She says it will boost unemployment and drive businesses and jobs overseas to countries like China and India that don't have such a tax. She thinks this insidious scheme can be stopped, but only if people revolt quickly as Sen. Reid vows to ram it home by the end of August.
Bachmann correctly points out that energy costs will double under the "cap and trade" energy tax.
Team "O" is getting ready to join the international "climate change" fleecing of tax dollars and jobs in America.
Recently, Fox News obtained a UN document which details how a "climate change" plan will use fake science to induce a massive worldwide redistribution of wealth in an attempt to control the global economy.
A new study from Spain illustrates the economic detriment of the country's "green jobs" plan. For every so-called "Green Job" created, at least 2.2 jobs from related industries are lost. Net result: thousands of job losses at the expense of appeasing radical environmentalists.
A recent Heritage study suggests that Obama's "Cap and trade" energy plan may cost upwards of $7 Trillion. "
Cap and trade" programs have killed jobs in California and the European Union.
The CBOestimates that "cap and trade" generally decreases revenue to the Federal Government, leading to an increased deficit. Obama's"cap and trade" energy plan -- which he said last week he would sign -- may cost over $2 Trillion and up to 4 million jobs.
Cap and trade bills are nothing short of a government re-engineering of the American economy. With its aggressive targets to reduce emissions from fossil fuel use, it would put the nation on a path of serious economic harm not justified by any benefits.
Not to mention, science has yet to show that "cap and trade" will actually do anything for so-called "climate change".
Just as Rahmbo The Ballerina said never let a good crisis go to waste, Obama has used the economic crisis as the impetus for passing his radical nationalized health-care agenda.
It's our view, that the President is not terribly concerned with actually fixing the economy.
Instead, he will use smoke and mirrors to covertly pass a radical Socialist agenda, establish a vast power grab for voting supremacy, and attempt to implode America from within.
The Obama Budget contains a $634 Billion "down payment" on national health-care that will ultimately top $1 Trillion!
And all of this crap to get health care that Europe has proven as a complete and utter failure. British PM Gordon Brown recently issued an apology for a "Third World Hospital".
President Obama all but declared victory in Iraq Tuesday, telling U.S. troops during a surprise visit to Camp Victory that they had given the Arab nation an opportunity to stand on its own as a democratic country. That, he said, is an extraordinary achievement.
"Here's a couple things I want to say. Number one, thank you," the president bellowed as he addressed troops at a stopover at the tail end of a marathon overseas trip.
Obama said the next 18 months are critical to the mission. U.S. troops are expected to be out of the country by the end of 2010.
"You've kept your eyes focused on just doing your job and because of that, every mission that's been assigned, from getting rid of Saddam to reducing violence to stabilizing the country to facilitating elections, you have given Iraq the opportunity to stand on its own as a democratic country. That is an extraordinary achievement and for that you have the thanks of the American people," he said.
It all started with a question: "How much responsibility, if any, do you have for the financial crisis?"
Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) and a conservative Harvard law student debated over how Frank should have handled his role as the House Chairman of the Financial Services Committee. Frank was at Harvard University for a speech at the Kennedy School of Government.
Frank said the student wasn't backing up his claims, invoking some laughter from the crowd, and the student told Frank he wasn't answering his question.
This student was absolutely incredible! "You're a public representative, I'm a student... it does allow me to ask you a question. I'm waiting for an answer."
Frank acts like a deranged lunatic while this student was intelligent, calm and rational.
Frank adds there is a "systematic right-wing attack to try and divert the blame." It amazes me how Frank continues to act like a child, knowing full-well that he shares a substantial amount of the blame for sub-prime mortgages which contributed to the current recession.
Here are some more facts about President warnings and attempts to avoid the housing collapse caused, in large part, by Freddie and Fannie. President Bush's efforts over the years, not once, but several from The White House:
2001 April: The Administration's FY02 budget declares that the size of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is "a potential problem," because "financial trouble of a large GSE could cause strong repercussions in financial markets, affecting Federally insured entities and economic activity."
2002 May: The President calls for the disclosure and corporate governance principles contained in his 10-point plan for corporate responsibility to apply to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. (OMB Prompt Letter to OFHEO, 5/29/02)
2003 September: Treasury Secretary John Snow testifies before the House Financial Services Committee to recommend that Congress enact "legislation to create a new Federal agency to regulate and supervise the financial activities of our housing-related government sponsored enterprises" and set prudent and appropriate minimum capital adequacy requirements. 2004 February: The President's FY05 Budget again highlights the risk posed by the explosive growth of the GSEs and their low levels of required capital, and called for creation of a new, world-class regulator: "The Administration has determined that the safety and soundness regulators of the housing GSEs lack sufficient power and stature to meet their responsibilities, and therefore…should be replaced with a new strengthened regulator." (2005 Budget Analytic Perspectives, pg. 83)
2005 April: Treasury Secretary John Snow repeats his call for GSE reform, saying "Events that have transpired since I testified before this Committee in 2003 reinforce concerns over the systemic risks posed by the GSEs and further highlight the need for real GSE reform to ensure that our housing finance system remains a strong and vibrant source of funding for expanding homeownership opportunities in America… Half-measures will only exacerbate the risks to our financial system." (Secretary John W. Snow, "Testimony Before The U.S. House Financial Services Committee," 4/13/05)
2007 August: President Bush emphatically calls on Congress to pass a reform package for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, saying "first things first when it comes to those two institutions. Congress needs to get them reformed, get them streamlined, get them focused, and then I will consider other options." (President George W. Bush, Press Conference, The White House, 8/9/07)
2008 February: Assistant Secretary David Nason reiterates the urgency of reforms, says "A new regulatory structure for the housing GSEs is essential if these entities are to continue to perform their public mission successfully." (David Nason, Testimony On Reforming GSE Regulation, Senate Committee On Banking, Housing And Urban Affairs, 2/7/08)
March: President Bush calls on Congress to take action and "move forward with reforms on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. They need to continue to modernize the FHA, as well as allow State housing agencies to issue tax-free bonds to homeowners to refinance their mortgages." (President George W. Bush, Remarks To The Economic Club Of New York, New York, NY, 3/14/08)
April: President Bush urges Congress to pass the much needed legislation and "modernize Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. [There are] constructive things Congress can do that will encourage the housing market to correct quickly by … helping people stay in their homes." (President George W. Bush, Meeting With Cabinet, the White House, 4/14/08)
May: President Bush issues several pleas to Congress to pass legislation reforming Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac before the situation deteriorates further. "Americans are concerned about making their mortgage payments and keeping their homes. Yet Congress has failed to pass legislation I have repeatedly requested to modernize the Federal Housing Administration that will help more families stay in their homes, reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to ensure they focus on their housing mission, and allow State housing agencies to issue tax-free bonds to refinance sub-prime loans." (President George W. Bush, Radio Address, 5/3/08) "[T]he government ought to be helping creditworthy people stay in their homes. And one way we can do that – and Congress is making progress on this – is the reform of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. That reform will come with a strong, independent regulator." (President George W. Bush, Meeting With The Secretary Of The Treasury, the White House, 5/19/08) "Congress needs to pass legislation to modernize the Federal Housing Administration, reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to ensure they focus on their housing mission, and allow State housing agencies to issue tax-free bonds to refinance subprime loans." (President George W. Bush, Radio Address, 5/31/08)
June: As foreclosure rates continued to rise in the first quarter, the President once again asks Congress to take the necessary measures to address this challenge, saying "we need to pass legislation to reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac." (President George W. Bush, Remarks At Swearing In Ceremony For Secretary Of Housing And Urban Development, Washington, D.C., 6/6/08)
July: Congress heeds the President's call for action and passes reform of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as it becomes clear that the institutions are failing. And just where was The Messiah during all of this?
Finally, on the matter of deregulation and the financial crisis, Sen. Obama should consider his own complicity in the failure of Congress to adopt legislation that might have prevented the subprime meltdown.
In the summer of 2005, a bill emerged from the Senate Banking Committee that considerably tightened regulations on Fannie and Freddie, including controls over their capital and their ability to hold portfolios of mortgages or mortgage-backed securities. All the Republicans voted for the bill in committee; all the Democrats voted against it. To get the bill to a vote in the Senate, a few Democratic votes were necessary to limit debate. This was a time for the leadership Sen. Obama says he can offer, but neither he nor any other Democrat stepped forward.
Instead, by his own account, Mr. Obama wrote a letter to the Treasury Secretary, allegedly putting himself on record that subprime loans were dangerous and had to be dealt with. This is revealing; if true, it indicates Sen. Obama knew there was a problem with subprime lending -- but was unwilling to confront his own party by pressing for legislation to control it. As a demonstration of character and leadership capacity, it bears a strong resemblance to something else in Sen. Obama's past: voting present.
Heritage reminds us that Obama was involved in defeating reform for Fannie.
In 2004, after a tip from a whistle blower who was later fired, the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight (Ofheo) issued a report finding that the government-sponsored entity Fannie Mae had engaged in Enron-like accounting machinations that allowed Fannie to overstate its earnings and underestimate the risk the company faced. The accounting wizardry Fannie engaged in was designed so that Fannie could meet profit targets to maximize bonus payments to company executives like Clinton administration deputy attorney general Jamie Gorelick and Carter administration assistant director for domestic policy Franklin Raines.
Fannie was created during the New Deal to make homes more affordable for lower- and middle-income Americans. Freddie was added years later for the same purpose. Fannie and Freddie have long outlived their purpose as the market for repackaging loans as securities is now well developed. When the housing market is booming, they are not needed, and they have both gone well beyond their original mission and are now backing loans for wealthy (witness Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s continued efforts to raise the cap on the size of the loans that Fannie and Freddie can buy).
Many parts of the bill the Senate passed last week only continue the worst aspects of the crony capitalism at the hard of Freddie’s success. This is especially true of the Community Development Block Grant funds that have long been a goal of partisan housing activist groups like ACORN. There is an opportunity here to use the recapitalization the White House is now proposing to re-organize housing finance by breaking up Fannie and Freddie and creating several smaller truly private entities that can compete.
Iran criticized on Monday U.S. President Barack Obama for saying Tehran posed a threat with its nuclear program and urged Washington and other countries possessing atom weapons to dismantle their arsenals.
Foreign Ministry spokesman HassanQashqavi made the comments a day after Obama, who is seeking to engage Iran diplomatically in a sharp policy shift from George W. Bush's approach, set out his vision for ridding the world of such arms.
Delivering a speech in Prague given new urgency by North Korea's rocket launch, Obama also said the United States would go ahead with plans to build a missile defense shield in Europe as long as Iran posed a threat with its nuclear activities.
Qashqavi noted that the Bush administration, which spearheaded a drive to isolate Iran over its disputed nuclear plans, had also described the Islamic state as a threat.
"It seems that the repetition of the past U.S. administration's accusations (against Iran) would be in contrast with the slogan of change (by Obama)," Qashqavi said.
"And such a thing -- nuclear armament -- does not exist in Iran to be inferred as a threat," he said.
The West suspects Iran's nuclear program is a cover for developing bombs. Iran, the world's fourth-largest oil producer, says it is a peaceful drive to generate electricity.
Asked about North Korea's rocket launch, which analysts said was effectively a test of a ballistic missile designed to carry a warhead as far as the U.S. state of Alaska, Qashqavi said Iran's and North Korea's missile activities were not related.
Obama last month offered Iran a "new beginning" of diplomatic engagement, following three decades of hostility. Iran has responded cautiously to the overture, saying Washington must show real policy change toward Iran rather than in words.
Qashqavi said nuclear weapons had no place in Iran's defense doctrine and that the existence of such arms was a serious threat to the global community.
"We, like the rest of the world community, are awaiting a world free of nuclear arms," Qashqavi said.
"Our expectation from the U.S. and others is to take serious and practical measures toward nuclear disarmament and dismantling of weapons of mass destruction," he said.
Support our troops. Pray for the family of Phillip Myers.
For the first time in 18 years, the media has been allowed to witness the return of a fallen soldier. NBCs Jim Miklaszewski told Contessa Brewer that President H.W. Bushs decision to bar media from witnessing coffins of returning soldier was political.
Personally, I don't agree with this policy, but I am not going to question his family's decision to allow media coverage.
That said, I'm sure the brass at MS NBC is having a party over this.
I am no fan of Obama and his radical socialist philosophy, but this bothers me immensely. I enjoy beating up his policy, but by no means do I want the President harmed.
In his first interview since Inauguration Day, Saddleback Church Pastor Rick Warren tells Larry King that is a misconception that he is an "Anti-Gay Marriage Activist". He adds that he never took a stance on California's Prop 8 Same-Sex Marriage debate and he doesn't concern himself with things like Iowa's recent Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage.
One crazy, deranged lunatic in Pittsburgh kills 3 and the Left jumps on it like every conservative in America is ready to join a militia.
David Shuster, another slobbery Obamanite, filled in for Chris Matthews on "Hardball". He leads the discussion on MS-NBC; another disgusting display of sickening Liberal Media Bias.
The claim is that Right Wing Leaders are "inciting violence" by scaring people into believing Team "O" is going to strip people of their 2nd Amendment rights. Shuster claims that people like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh are "inappropriately" using Nazi and Fascist imagery and analogies to represent Obama's America. It would appear marching orders have been sent to Obama's "media army" to attack Beck, Limbaugh and Hannity. They want to portray these commentors as radical lunatics of the right wing.
It's very important that we see how the other half thinks. The Liberal Media continues to cover-up for Obama.
There is nothing dangerous about discussing fascim! Team "O" is scary! It a reality that Obama and Pelosi are leading us down a path towards socialism and fascism!
It should not be surprising that Obamamaniacs like Shuster and Chris Matthews cannot accept the reality of the man they helped get elected. But it's imperative that we recognize the media is joining Obama's "Rules for Radicals"-inspired Presidency.
First the White House takes shots at Limbaugh, then the DNC runs anti-Limbaugh ads (even some in Spanish), then the press drills every GOP official about Limbaugh, then the left-leaning press takes the worst reactions and tries to create a false crisis out of it... wherever could such a strategy have sprung from?-Obama mentor Saul Alinsky’s handbook Rules for Radicals outlines the techniques used by this administration to try and break any link between Rush Limbaugh’s influence and the GOP- it’s basically a divide-and-conquer approach:
Rule 5: Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon. It’s hard to counterattack ridicule, and it infuriates the opposition, which then reacts to your advantage.
Rule 11: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, polarize it. Don’t try to attack abstract corporations or bureaucracies. Identify a responsible individual. Ignore attempts to shift or spread the blame.
According to Alinsky, the main job of the organizer is to bait an opponent into reacting. “The enemy properly goaded and guided in his reaction will be your major strength.”
Now that we know what the underhanded control-freak Obama is up to, conservatives, Limbaugh, and the GOP would be well-advised to ignore these malicious hypocrites, and don’t take the bait.
Karl Rove appeared this weekend on "Fox and Friends".
"I think he ought to get off the campaign trail and become President of The United States," Rove said.
Rove explains the dangers of such comments, adding Europeans will be thinking "'even President Obama admits America is arrogant', that's when they're going to stop listening and stop paying attention. This was a mistake."
Rove adds that Obama is sending a message to the world that "hurts America".
Right on, Michele! I know the Left is going to go nuts with this as they continue their assault on Bachmann, but I don't think she is that far off!
We are inching closer to Obama Youth!
Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) on the Sue Jeffers' show on KTLK in Minnesota, 4/4/09
Obama's National Citizen's Security Force is being pieced together, both at the Defense Department and in Congress.
Originally called Obama 2.0, "Organizing for America" is headed by Obama's campaign manager David Plouffe.
In early January, we highlighted the beginnings of the organization of "boots on the ground" designed to pressure Americans and lawmakers into accepting Obama's socialist agenda.
The Senate overwhelmingly approved a bill to broadly expand national community service programs, increasing the number of positions to 250,000 from 75,000 and creating new cadres of volunteers focused on education, clean energy, health care and veterans.
Sen. Jim DeMint has also discussed the many flaws of the National Service Act being considered on the Senate floor, calling it "a well-intentioned mistake".
Barack Obama, making his first visit to a Muslim nation as U.S. president, declared Monday the United States "is not at war with Islam" and called for a greater partnership with the Islamic world.
Of course, he failed to mention that we are no longer at war with radical Islamist extremist terrorists either, as this cowardly Administration has officially abandoned the terms "war on terror" and "enemy combatant" .
Barack Obama, making his first visit to a Muslim nation as president, declared Monday the United States "is not and will never be at war with Islam."
Urging a greater partnership with the Islamic world in an address to the Turkish parliament, Obama called the country an important ally in many areas, including the fight against terrorism. He devoted much of his speech to urging a greater bond between Americans and Muslims, portraying terrorist groups such as al-Qaida as extremists who do not represent the vast majority of Muslims.
"Let me say this as clearly as I can," Obama said. "The United States is not and will never be at war with Islam. In fact, our partnership with the Muslim world is critical ... in rolling back the violent ideologies that people of all faiths reject."
Two freelance photographers who snapped pics of Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen's weekend wedding in Costa Rica say they were shot at by the supermodel's security personnel. INF, the photo agency that hired Rolando Aviles and Uri Cortez, said yesterday the two men "narrowly escaped death" when bullets shattered the back windshield of the duo's Suzuki jeep then hit the vehicle's front window.
Um... this is a bit much. Paparazzi are evil, but why are Gisele's bodyguards armed and ready to fire at a moments notice? I'm all for gun rights, but people like these bodyguards show the irresponsible side of things that fuel Liberal fire.
“I'm not naive. This goal will not be reached quickly –- perhaps not in my lifetime. It will take patience and persistence,” President Obama told an adoring crowd that waved miniature American and Czech flags. “But now we, too, must ignore the voices who tell us that the world cannot change. We have to insist, "Yes, we can."
Newt was on fire today on "Fox News Sunday"!
Indeed, a nuke free world is an impossibility. But then again, Obama thinks Iran is a tiny country which poses no real threat to America.
Six gay men were abandoned by their tribes and later murdered recently in Iraq.
CNN reports on mistreatment of gay men in Iraq. Apparently, they had more freedom of expression under Saddam Hussein than they currently have due to militias patrolling the streets of Iraq cities.
Intolerant Iraqis consider gays to be "criminals and terrorists" and say that homosexuality is "against [Muslim] law, so they should be punished by law".
Despite my "conservative" nature, I'm could care less about gays, same-sex marriage or any other lifestyle choice a person chooses for himself.
When it comes to such social issues, I'm pretty Libertarian; "to each his own".
It's pretty despicable for rogue peace keepers to murder these people for their sexual orientation. It just shows another example of the radical nature of Islam.
For all of the world's efforts to bring peace and prosperity to the Muslim world, it's cases like this which show they may not be terribly receptive to the assistance.
Everyone is quick to point fingers at human rights violations in China and the African Continent, but we have to mince words when it comes to the radical laws of Islam. I'm all for freedom of expression and religious tolerance, but not when the laws of religion supersede the laws and rights of man.
No matter your religion or sexual orientation, murder is dead wrong. No matter how much you disagree with another's lifestyle, you have no right to persecute him to the point of death.
In reality, this is exactly the kind of Western "freedom" the Muslim World detests.
"If the Republicans can't break out of being the right wing party of big government, then I think you would see a third party movement in 2012," Newt Gingrich said during a Wednesday speech in Missouri.
Speaking on Fox News Sunday, the former Speaker of the House expanded on why conservatives might turn away from the Republican Party.
"Republicans need to understand that there's a country which did not like the big spending of the last administration, didn't like the interventionist policies of the last administration and the country at large would like to see a genuine alternative to the Obama strategy of basically trying to run the entire economy from the white house and basically trying to increase government, I think, by 36% this year, which is the largest single increase outside of war in American history," said Gingrich.
When asked about his level of participation in such a party, Gingrich said, "No, look, I lived through watching Ross Perot run in 1992 and split the conservative movement in two."
Is this how a "statesman" acts? Or is this a frat boy at a kegger?
David Axelrod responded to Dick Cheney's recent criticism of President Obama Sunday on CNN's State of the Union.
"[President Bush] has behaved like a statesman," Axelrod told John King, "I just don't think the memo got passed on to the Vice President [Cheney]."
Axelrod disagreed with Cheney's assertion that Obama's terrorism policies were failing.
"I find it supremely ironic, on a day when we were meeting with NATO, to talk about the continued threat from al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan, where they're still plotting against us eight years -- or seven years later," he said. "I think the question for Mr. Cheney is, how could that be? How could this have gone so long? Why are they still in business?"
Hey Dave! I don't think Obama got the memo either as he has been parading around Europe blaming America for the world's problems, calling us "arrogant" and genuinely acting like frat boy on a road trip.
I think Axelrod needs to be reminded of what "statesman" means.
A statesman or stateswoman or statesperson is usually a politician or other notable figure of state who has had a long and respected career in politics at the national and international level.
As a term of respect, it is usually left to supporters or commentators to use the term. When politicians retire, they are often referred to as elder statesmen.
Statespersonship also conveys a quality of leadership that organically brings people together and of eldership, a spirit of caring for others and for the whole.
Anyone elected to office is a politician but only a few consistently manage to work as disinterested promoters of the public good with integrity. There is a huge difference between the two.
The words statesman or stateswoman are applied loosely to any head of state, any senior political figure, or anyone who in a given moment exhibits a certain quality of "statespersonship."
Cheney has served our country for decades and is far more of a "statesman" than Obama will ever be.
Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner told Katie Couric last week he is open to more unconstitutional terminations of CEOs, continuing Team "O"s assault on the markets, investors and capitalism.
President Obama, in a blatant abuse on his constitutional Executive power, felt it necessary to fire GM CEO Rick Wagoner.
Geithner has recently unveiled a plan designed to give Treasury Department the ability to take over financial institutions at the Secretary's choosing.
Recently, a bill has been introduced in Congress, HR 1664 Grayson-Himes Pay For Performance Act of 2009, which aims to cap pay which is not performance based and any and all employees who work for companies receiving bailout dollars.
It's a power grab to redistribute wealth, penalize the successful and establish a communistic "equality" among Americans. Regulation = control and power. Team "O" wants to destroy free market capitalism. There is ample proof of Obama's war on investors. Welcome to The United Socialist States of America (USSA).
The "Firing" executives discussion begins at the 6:00 mark.
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said he’s prepared to oust the senior management and boards of directors at banks that require “exceptional” assistance from the U.S. government.
“If in the future, banks need exceptional assistance in order to get through this, then we will make sure that assistance comes,” while ensuring taxpayers are protected, Geithner said today in an interview on the CBS “Face the Nation” program. “Where that requires a change in management and the board, then we will do that.”
Geithner noted that American International Group Inc., Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac had their chief executives removed after it became clear the companies couldn’t survive without government rescues. The Treasury is reviewing how much capital the biggest U.S. financial companies need in order to endure a severe economic downturn.
“Where we’ve had to do exceptional things,” the government has replaced management and boards of directors, Geithner said.
"It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama" -- Joe "The Prophet" Biden said last year on the campaign trail.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates told "Fox News Sunday" last week that the United States is not prepared to respond to a North Korean missile launch. He says we can do nothing to stop North Korea from breaking international law in the next 10 days by firing a missile that is unlikely to be shot down by the U.S. or its allies.
Last weekend, Japan announced it was sending naval ships equipped with missile interceptors to its northern coast in anticipation of North Korea's planned long-range missile test.
Last week, while speaking to reporters during a visit to Mexico City, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned North Korea that firing a missile for any purpose would be a 'provocative act' that would have consequences.
Just a few days ago, Clinton said Japan had a right to defend itself against North Korea.
WASHINGTON (AP) - The State Department says that North Korea has launched a rocket, following through on its promise of a launch despite international criticism. State Department spokesman Fred Lash confirmed the launch, saying it occurred at 10:30 p.m. EDT Saturday.
"We look on this as a provocative act," said Lash.
North Korea had informed international authorities that it planned to launch a rocket sometime between Saturday and Wednesday in order to put a satellite into orbit.
But the U.S., South Korea, Japan and others suspect it is a cover for testing a long-range missile for the North, which has nuclear weapons. Leaders from those countries had warned Pyongyang not to proceed with the planned rocket launch.
They fear such a test could be a first step toward putting a nuclear warhead on a missile capable of reaching Alaska and beyond.
On April 4, 1968, LIFE photographer Henry Groskinsky and writer Mike Silva, on assignment in Alabama, learned that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., had been shot at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. They raced to the scene and there, incredibly, had unfettered access to the hotel grounds, Dr. King's room, and the surrounding area. For reasons that have been lost in the intervening years, the photographs taken that night and the next day were never published. Until now.
This is just silly... Hundreds of people took part in a mass pillow fight in the streets of Warsaw as part of international pillow fight day.
"I have no idea about any demonstration. For me, it's just an excuse to beat up other people with pillows, just a bit of harmless violence," said one participant.
I had no idea there was such a thing as international pillow fight day. Looks to me like it's just an excuse to beat up other people with pillows.
Those Poles sure know how to throw a party! I just hope no one was drinking! Vodka and feathers don't mix.
Looks like they've come a long way since Solidarity; Lech Walesa must be so proud.

Joe Wurzelbacher continues to make a lot more sense than any Liberal.
I give him a lot of credit for standing up for his beliefs in very unfriendly territory.
Maher tried really hard to make Joe look ignorant, naive and foolish but Joe hits back at every shot. Maher acts like a snarky a*shole, as usual, and Joe slams him at every turn.
Bristol Palin's ex-boyfriend Levi Johnston appeared on "Tyra" with his family.
Gov. Sarah Palin issued a very blunt statement in response to his appearance, saying the Johnstons are more concerned about exploiting their "fame" than for taking care of Levi and Bristol's child.
That statement is at the end of this clip, after Tyra and Levi discuss "safe sex".
Last week, an alliance of the Taliban and Afghan military promised "amazing" attacks on Washington, D.C. and the Taliban once again called Obama's diplomacy efforts a "lunatic idea".
A Pakistani Taliban militant leader has claimed responsibility for the attack on a U.S. immigration center in New York state in which 13 people were killed, Reuters reported.
"I accept responsibility. They were my men. I gave them orders in reaction to U.S. drone attacks," Baituallah Mehsud told Reuters by telephone from an undisclosed location on Saturday.
U.S. officials were not immediately available for comment about Mehsud's claim, Reuters reported, and one Pakistani security analyst dismissed the claim as a publicity stunt.
Representative Maurice Hinchey, whose district includes Binghamton, told the New York Times that indications are the gunman was an immigrant from Vietnam.
Mehsud's claim comes as a suspected U.S. drone fired two missiles at an alleged militant hide-out Saturday in northwestern Pakistan, killing 13 people.
Barack Obama, the World's Greatest Orator (™all news organisations), didn't exactly cover himself in glory when the BBC's political editor Nick Robinson asked him a question about who was to blame for the financial crisis. Normally word perfect, Obama ummed, ahed and waffled for the best part of two and a half minutes. Here, John Crace decodes what he was really thinking ...
Nick Robinson: "A question for you both, if I may. The prime minister has repeatedly blamed the United States of America for causing this crisis. France and Germany both blame Britain and America for causing this crisis. Who is right? And isn't the debate about that at the heart of the debate about what to do now?" Brown immediately swivels to leave Obama in pole position. There is a four-second delay before Obama starts speaking
[THANKS FOR NOTHING, GORDY BABY. REMIND ME TO HANG YOU OUT TO DRY ONE DAY.]
Barack Obama: "I, I, would say that, er ... pause[I HAVEN'T A CLUE] ... if you look at ... pause[WHO IS THIS NICK ROBINSON JERK?] ... the, the sources of this crisis ... pause [JUST KEEP GOING, BUDDY] ... the United States certainly has some accounting to do with respect to . . . pause[I'M IN WAY TOO DEEP HERE] ... a regulatory system that was inadequate to the massive changes that have taken place in the global financial system ... pause, close eyes [THIS IS GOING TO GO DOWN LIKE A CROCK OF SHIT BACK HOME. HELP]. I think what is also true is that ... pause[I WANT NICK ROBINSON TO DISAPPEAR] ... here in Great Britain ... pause[SHIT, GORDY'S THE HOST, DON'T LAND HIM IN IT] ... here in continental Europe ... pause [DAMN IT, BLAME EVERYONE.] ... around the world. We were seeing the same mismatch between the regulatory regimes that were in place and er ... pause [I'VE LOST MY TRAIN OF THOUGHT AGAIN] ... the highly integrated, er, global capital markets that have emerged ... pause [I'M REALLY WINGING IT NOW]. So at this point, I'm less interested in ... pause[YOU] ... identifying blame than fixing the problem. I think we've taken some very aggressive steps in the United States to do so, not just responding to the immediate crisis, ensuring banks are adequately capitalised, er, dealing with the enormous, er ... pause[WHY DIDN'T I QUIT WHILE I WAS AHEAD?] ... drop-off in demand and contraction that has taken place. More importantly, for the long term, making sure that we've got a set of, er, er, regulations that are up to the task, er, and that includes, er, a number that will be discussed at this summit. I think there's a lot of convergence between all the parties involved about the need, for example, to focus not on the legal form that a particular financial product takes or the institution it emerges from, but rather what's the risk involved, what's the function of this product and how do we regulate that adequately, much more effective coordination, er, between countries so we can, er, anticipate the risks that are involved there. Dealing with the, er, problem of derivatives markets, making sure we have set up systems, er, that can reduce some of the risks there. So, I actually think ... pause[FANTASTIC. I'VE LOST EVERYONE, INCLUDING MYSELF] ... there's enormous consensus that has emerged in terms of what we need to do now and, er ... pause[I'M OUTTA HERE. TIME FOR THE USUAL CLOSING BOLLOCKS] ... I'm a great believer in looking forwards than looking backwards.

TOTUS, how dare you let down Dear Leader on the International stage!
8 Minutes of hilarity from the best of C-Span! Oh my god, it's priceless! The "lighter" side of politics! Seriously, freaking hysterical. Warning: Adults Only!
Oddly enough, he did make one good point by saying that another $1 Trillion in spending is "more money for a bottomless pit."
Hmmm.... maybe Republicans should have consulted Hugo in their fight against the CRAPulus Spending Bill.
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Friday ridiculed the G-20 summit's attempts to deal with the global financial meltdown, saying that capitalism is in crisis and must end.
Chavez criticized the G-20 nations' pledges of more than a trillion dollars for lending to struggling countries at Thursday's summit in London, calling it "the same medicine that's killing the patient—a trillion dollars ... more money for a bottomless pit."
Speaking during a visit to Iran, the Venezuelan leader said the plans by the Group of 20 industrial and developing countries would strengthen "one of the great guilty ones behind the crisis: the International Monetary Fund."
The IMF and the World Bank are "tools of imperialism" and must be eliminated, Chavez said.
In earlier remarks, he also blamed the United States and Britain, calling them "the most guilty" for the financial crisis sweeping the globe because of the financial model "they've been imposing for years."
"It's impossible that capitalism can regulate the monster that is the world financial system, it's impossible," Chavez told Venezuela's state TV late Thursday. "Capitalism needs to go down. It has to end. And we must take a transitional road to a new model that we call socialism."
An English speaker with an American accent appears in a Jihadist video, laughing and talking about ambushing and killing Ethiopian and Somali soldiers.
MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) - A man who calls himself an American promotes holy war in Somalia in a video posted this week on an Islamic militant Web site. A U.S. government contractor who tracks extremist propaganda says the footage is the first to show what may be an American with a senior role in al-Shabab, a Somali group the State Department considers a terrorist organization with links to al-Qaida.
The half-hour video features an amateur English-language rap soundtrack and purports to show an operation against Ethiopian troops in Somalia. It appeared on Web sites where al-Qaida and other militant groups often post messages and videos. A caption says it was filmed on July 15, 2008.
A tall man with long dark hair and a wide smile who appears to be in his 20s and gives his nom de guerre as "Abu Mansour al-Amriki," or "the American," urges Muslims around the world to send their children to replace his group's fallen fighters.
"If you can encourage more of your children, and more of your neighbors, and anyone around you to send people ... to this jihad, it would be a great asset for us," he says.
Al-Amriki speaks English with a North American accent and reads verses from the Quran in fluent classical Arabic. He appears to be of European or possibly Arab descent but it was impossible to independently confirm his nationality or where the video was filmed.
The man appears in a scrubby rural clearing filled with short trees and dust. There are few identifying markers indicating he is in Somalia, though several of his companions appear to be Somalis.
In the Somali capital, Mogadishu, a former fighter, Mohamed Muqtar, said he had met the man more than two years ago in the Islamist stronghold of Kismayo, Somalia's third-largest town.
"This is the same man, the American man, I saw in Kismayo two years ago when I was being trained there," he said. "This man was training us how to make land mines and explosives."
"The pollution from cars in Boston or from factories in Beijing are melting the ice caps in the arctic. And that will disrupt weather patterns everywhere."
Fear-mongering? Nah, he's just making up shit now to pass his "cap and trade" energy plan.
Team "O" is getting ready to join the international "climate change" fleecing of tax dollars and jobs in America.
Last week, Fox News obtained a UN document which details how a "climate change" plan will use fake science to induce a massive worldwide redistribution of wealth in an attempt to control the global economy.
"Cap and trade" programs have killed jobs in California and the European Union.
The CBO estimates that "cap and trade" generally decreases revenue to the Federal Government, leading to an increased deficit.
