Russia, Iran, Venezuela Continue To Forge Anti-US Alliance; Senate Approves Military Cuts

"We will supply Venezuela the weapons that Venezuela asks for. Why not tanks? Without question, we have good tanks. If our friends want our tanks, we will deliver them."

-- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev

The US and Russia have given differing responses to Iran's latest proposals on its nuclear programme.

Anyone else sense a growing problem here? Then again, our President wants to cozy up to the communists and radicals who run these three dangerous countries. Is he naive or crazy or does he really hate America as much as it seems?

Yahoo News:

BARVIKHA, Russia (Reuters) – Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez cemented a closer alliance with Russia on Thursday, recognizing two pro-Russian rebel regions of Georgia as independent and securing arms supplies and loans in return.

Chavez's move to recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia is a rare diplomatic success for Russia, which has tried for over a year to persuade its allies to follow its lead and treat the two small regions as sovereign. Only Nicaragua had agreed so far.

"Venezuela from today is joining in the recognition of the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia," Chavez told President Dmitry Medvedev through a translator at the Russian leader's residence outside Moscow.

Caracas would start the process of establishing diplomatic relations with them soon, he added.

The rest of the world views the two regions, which threw off Georgian rule in the early 1990s and have run their own affairs since, as an integral part of Georgia. The issue has become a key sticking point in relations between the West and Russia.

President Dmitry Medvedev thanked Chavez, who is visiting Moscow, for his support. Shortly afterwards he said Russia would supply tanks and other weapons sought by Venezuela.

"We will supply Venezuela the weapons that Venezuela asks for," Medvedev said after their talks.

"Why not tanks? Without question, we have good tanks. If our friends want our tanks, we will deliver them."

No details were given of the arms deal but Russia's state RIA news agency quoted a military source as saying Venezuela would buy 100 tanks for $500 million. The two sides also announced plans for a joint bank with capital of $4 billion to finance their projects.

Venezuela wants to beef up its weaponry to resist what Chavez terms U.S. imperialism in Latin America. Tension has also been rising with neighboring Colombia, a close U.S. ally and historic rival of Venezuela.

Exclusive: Obama's Newest Statement On Iran Protests "We respect Iran’s sovereignty, but we also are witnessing peaceful demonstrations" (Video)

In an interview taped Friday at the White House which was scheduled for broadcast on Sunday by Dawn News, Pakistan's first 24-hour English-language news channel, President Obama discussed a myriad of Middle Eastern topics including the current chaos in Iran.

Dawn.com reports:

Asked to comment on Ayatollah Khamenei’s statement that the US was interfering in Iran’s internal affairs, Mr Obama said what’s happening in Iran was remarkable. ‘To see hundreds of thousands of people in peaceful protest against an election that obviously raised a lot of doubts tells us that this is an issue that the Iranian people care deeply about.’

The US and the West, he said, had been very clear that this was not an issue between the West and Iran; this was an issue about the Iranian people seeking justice and wanting to make sure that their voices were heard.

‘And it’s unfortunate that there are some inside Iran and inside that government that want to use the West and the United States as an excuse,’ he said.

‘We respect Iran’s sovereignty, but we also are witnessing peaceful demonstrations, people expressing themselves, and I stand for that universal principle that people should have a voice in their own lives and their own destiny. And I hope that the international community recognises that we need to stand behind peaceful protests and be opposed to violence or repression.’

Mr Obama said that since there were no international observers in Iran, he could not say if the elections were fair or unfair. ‘But beyond the election, what’s clear is that the Iranian people are wanting to express themselves. And it is critical, as they seek justice and they seek an opportunity to express themselves, that that’s respected and not met with violence.’

‘Your speech in Cairo indeed was a speech that created a lot of stir, both in the US and in the Muslim world. Was it the beginning of something bigger to come, or was it just a one-off thing? He was asked.

‘No, I think that this is going to be a sustained process. As I said in Cairo, one speech is not going to transform policies and relationships throughout the Middle East or throughout the world,’ Mr Obama responded.

‘But what I wanted to do was to describe very clearly that the United States not only respects Muslim communities around the world but that there’s an opportunity for I think a new day, where there’s mutual understanding, mutual tolerance; where the United States is seen as somebody who stands with people in their daily aspirations for an education for their children, for good jobs, for economic development,’ he said.

‘And just as the United States at times has, I think, not fully understood what’s happening in Muslim communities, sometimes there have been countries that haven’t understood the rich history of Muslims in America,’ he added.

Where Is Obama? GOP Lawmakers Press Obama to Take Tougher Stance on Iran, George Will Calls Attacks "Foolish Criticism"

Though the White House released a written statement Saturday in which President Obama used his strongest language to date to condemn what he called a "violent and unjust" government crackdown on protesters, critics say he needs to show more leadership on the issue.

Fox News reports:

"The president of the United States is supposed to lead the free world, not follow it," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said on ABC's "This Week." "He's been timid and passive more than I would like."

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., the president's opponent in the 2008 election, said Obama should "be stronger than he has been" with Iran and suggested European heads of state were showing more leadership than Obama on the issue.

"I think we ought to have America lead. When you look at the statements by President Sarkozy, Chancellor Merkel and Prime Minister Brown have been much stronger. We should lead. And I also think he should point out that this is not just an Iranian issue. This is an American issue -- what we're all about," McCain said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

He said he's not in favor of "sending arms" or "fomenting violence," but that the United States needs to "be on the right side of history." Protesters view last week's election as rigged.

Both McCain and Graham said Obama was moving in the right direction with his written statement Saturday but needs to do more.

Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich., told "FOX News Sunday" that Obama, in person, needs to address the Iranian and American people -- he called the election backlash a potential "game changer" in Iran which Obama should leverage.

"This president is a great orator. This president needs to come out, he needs to speak to the American people, but more important he needs to speak to the people of Iran, the people of the Middle East and he has to make a forceful statement on behalf of the people on the streets for freedom and democracy," Hoekstra said. The top Republican on the House intelligence committee said Obama needs to follow up on the groundwork he laid with his recent address to the Muslim world in Cairo.

Iran Protestors Beat Up Basij Thugs; Netanyahu Responds To Violence (Video)

Fox News reports:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that the Iranian regime's repressive nature has been "unmasked" by the turmoil over the country's disputed election last week.

He spoke as the official death toll in Iran rose to at least 19, as protesters continued to march in the streets and clash with regime forces.

"You see a regime that represses its own people and spreads terror far and wide," Netanyahu said on NBC's "Meet the Press." "It is a regime whose real nature has been unmasked and it's been unmasked by an incredible act of courage by Iran's citizens. ... You see the Iranian lack of democracy at work."

Israel considers the Iranian regime, with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as president and hard-line clerics at the top, as a monumental threat. Ahmadinejad, known for his bellicose rhetoric, has called for the destruction of Israel and is suspected of pursuing nuclear weapons technology.

Netanyahu declined to predict where the protests would lead, but said they represent a "fundamental" event for the country.

"I cannot tell you how this thing will end up. I think something very deep and very fundamental is going on," Netanyahu said. "There is an expression of the deep desire amid the people of Iran for freedom. ... This is what is going on."

Though President Obama has come under criticism in the United States for not being more forceful in his support for the protesters, Netanyahu said he would not "second guess" the American president.

"I know President Obama wants the people of Iran to be free," he said.

Dramatic Video: Pro-Ahmadinejad Militia Gunman Fires At Protestors In Iran (Video)

Video taken Monday outside what is believed to be Tehran building housing the pro-Ahmadinejad Basij 'people's militia' purports to show gunman firing into protesters who breached security gates.

Fox News reports:

A blurry video clip posted on YouTube may show a gunman killing protesters in Tehran Monday evening.

In the clip, likely shot from a cell phone, a blue-shirted gunman fires an AK-47 into a courtyard from a second-story window.

In the foreground, a crowd of protesters shouts slogans as dozens of shots ring out. The gunman and his targets are behind a high wall, so the crowd doesn't move.

Iranian students say they're doomed if Obama recognizes Iran's election result (Video)

Looks like they will be doomed then with hands-off, non-committal responses like this from Team Obama:

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the U.S. would continue to monitor the situation closely.

"But we, like the rest of the world, are waiting and watching to see what the Iranian people decide," she said at a news conference in Niagara Falls, Ontario. "The United States has refrained from commenting on the election in Iran. We obviously hope that the outcome reflects the genuine will and desire of the Iranian people."

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said the Obama administration was "impressed by the vigorous debate and enthusiasm that this election generated, particularly among young Iranians."

Hot Air sum it up this way:

Much depends on the meaning of “accepts,” though, doesn’t it? I’m sure we’ll get some patented Hopenchange drivel tomorrow about “grave concerns,” etc, but if Iran’s kids are expecting The One to walk away from nuke negotiations in protest of the coup, they’re kidding themselves. For one thing, that’s something Bush would do, and of course Bush was never, evah right. For another, if Obama walks away then he’s essentially betting all his chips on a full-blown counterrevolution to erupt and topple the regime. If it doesn’t, or if it’s put down a la Tiananmen Square, Khamenei et al. will be in no mood to forgive and forget. Which means it’s either war to take out Iran’s nuke infrastructure or learn to stop worrying and love the Iranian bomb. Israelis are learning already!

Netanyahu Talks Directly To Obama Not The Press (Video)

Notice the body language of the Prime Minister. It's clear that he understands the Iranian nuclear threat for better than the President.

Fox News reports:

President Obama won't put an "artificial deadline" on Iran to abandon its nuclear weapons program but said Monday that the Islamic Republic's obtaining a nuclear weapon would be not only a threat to Israel and the U.S. but "profoundly destabilizing" to the international community in general.

In talks with reporters after a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Obama said he would not let talks go on forever, but the June election in Iran will be revealing about whether there is a chance for progress with Tehran by the end of the year.

"Iran is a country of extraordinary history and extraordinary potential and we want them to be a full-fledged member of the international community, and be in a position to provide opportunity and prosperity for their people but that the way to achieve those goals is not through the pursuit of a nuclear weapon," Obama said.

The president added that a "range of steps" are still available against Iran, including sanctions, if it continues its nuclear program.

"We are not foreclosing a range of steps ... in assuring that Iran understands that we are serious," he added.

Netanyahu said Iran's obtaining nuclear weapons would be an existential threat not only to Israel but the rest of the world.

"It could give the nuclear umbrella to terrorists or worse, it could actually give nuclear weapons to terrorists I believe it would put all of us in great peril," he said. He added that in his 59 years of life -- the modern Jewish state is only 61 years old -- he has never seen the Arabs and Jews so closely share the same threat as the one they both face from Iran.

Leon Panetta's Secret Mission to Stop Israel Bombing Iranian Nuclear Plant

And so it came to pass; that Saint Barack catered to the radical Islamist world. Henceforth, Americans and America's greatest ally Israel was put in jeopardy.

This is horrible, horrible news.

Times Online reports:

America’s spy chief was sent on a secret mission to Israel to warn its leaders not to launch a surprise attack on Iran without notifying the US Administration.

As Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, prepares to visit Washington, it emerged yesterday that Leon Panetta, the head of the CIA, went to Israel two weeks ago. He sought assurances from Mr Netanyahu and Ehud Barak, the Defence Minister, that their hawkish new Government would not attack Iran without alerting Washington.

Concerns have been rising that Mr Netanyahu could launch a strike on Tehran’s atomic programme, in the same way that Israel hit Saddam Hussein’s Osirak reactor in 1981. Israel has been preparing for such an eventuality. It has carried out long-distance manoeuvres and is due to hold its largest civil defence drills this summer. The country’s leaders reportedly told Mr Panetta that they did not “intend to surprise the US on Iran”.

Mr Netanyahu will leave for Washington this weekend. He will meet Hillary Clinton, the Secretary of State, and Mr Obama, whom he will try to convince of the need for tougher action against Iran. Mr Obama favours trying to engage Tehran, but his efforts have been received coolly by President Ahmadinejad.

Journalist Roxana Saberi Freed By Iranian Appeal Court Verdict

Roxana Saberi, an American journalist convicted in Iran on spying charges, is to be freed after an appeals court downgraded her sentence.

In January, Saberi was arrested in Iran for allegedly buying wine.

The Daily Telegraph reports:

Lawyers for the 32-year old said the court had reduced the eight-year jail sentence to a suspended two-year term and she would soon be freed.

The Iranian-American television reporter had lived in Iran for six years before she was charged with "cooperating with a hostile state" after her arrest in January. The harsh sentence provoked an international backlash that prompted Iran's hardline president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to express concern that she had received due process. After his intervention the head of the Iranian judicary asked for the appeal court review.

"The verdict of the previous court has been quashed," lawyer Saleh Nikbakht said. "Her punishment has been changed to a suspended two-year sentence and she will be out of prison."

Saberi's father Reza said he and his wife Akiko were on their way to Tehran's Evin jail, where their daughter has been held, "to bring our daughter back home". Mr Saberi said his daughter would be allowed to leave Iran

The former US beauty queen launched a hunger strike on April 21 in protest at her sentence, taking in only water or sugared water, but she ended it after about two weeks after being briefly hospitalised in the prison clinic.

The sentence was handed down just weeks after new US President Barack Obama proposed better ties with Tehran after three decades of severed ties.

Iran, which does not recognise dual nationality, has said Saberi had continued working "illegally" after her press card was revoked in 2006.

Saberi, who is also of Japanese origin, has reported for US National Public Radio, the BBC and Fox News,

Does Pentagon Support Russia's Return to Iraq? (Video)

Russia will play a substantial role in Iraq's economic recovery, says Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki during his first visit to Moscow.

Russia also wants to play a role in re-establishing Iraq's military.

This all sound nuts to me; considering the Russians affinity for Iran.

Think about it, Iran and Iraq have been at war for what, like forever? Russia and Iran are clear allies. Russia will not act as an intermediary between the U.S. and Iran in diplomatic talks.

Obama has already surrendered to Russia over an Eastern Europe missile defense shield.

He allowed Russia to outbid the U.S. over a strategic airbase in Kyrgyzstan that the U.S. military had been using to fight terror in Afghanistan.

Hillary Clinton's "reset" blunder added to Team "O"'s amateurish image.

Russia has also recently confirmed a missile contract with Iran and the Kremlin signaled a harder line of relations with the U.S.

Does anyone else see this as a problem?

Iran Criticizes Obama, Calls On U.S. To Scrap Nuclear Arms

Another freakin' shocker from Iran!

Iran continues to toy with Obama and call his bluff for that whole soft, cowardly and cowardly "meet with Iran without preconditions" nonsense.

TEHRAN (Reuters)

Iran criticized on Monday U.S. President Barack Obama for saying Tehran posed a threat with its nuclear program and urged Washington and other countries possessing atom weapons to dismantle their arsenals.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hassan Qashqavi made the comments a day after Obama, who is seeking to engage Iran diplomatically in a sharp policy shift from George W. Bush's approach, set out his vision for ridding the world of such arms.

Delivering a speech in Prague given new urgency by North Korea's rocket launch, Obama also said the United States would go ahead with plans to build a missile defense shield in Europe as long as Iran posed a threat with its nuclear activities.

Qashqavi noted that the Bush administration, which spearheaded a drive to isolate Iran over its disputed nuclear plans, had also described the Islamic state as a threat.

"It seems that the repetition of the past U.S. administration's accusations (against Iran) would be in contrast with the slogan of change (by Obama)," Qashqavi said.

"And such a thing -- nuclear armament -- does not exist in Iran to be inferred as a
threat,"
he said.

The West suspects Iran's nuclear program is a cover for developing bombs. Iran, the world's fourth-largest oil producer, says it is a peaceful drive to generate electricity.

Asked about North Korea's rocket launch, which analysts said was effectively a test of a ballistic missile designed to carry a warhead as far as the U.S. state of Alaska, Qashqavi said Iran's and North Korea's missile activities were not related.

Obama last month offered Iran a "new beginning" of diplomatic engagement, following three decades of hostility. Iran has responded cautiously to the overture, saying Washington must show real policy change toward Iran rather than in words.

Qashqavi said nuclear weapons had no place in Iran's defense doctrine and that the existence of such arms was a serious threat to the global community.

"We, like the rest of the world community, are awaiting a world free of nuclear arms," Qashqavi said.

"Our expectation from the U.S. and others is to take serious and practical measures toward nuclear disarmament and dismantling of weapons of mass destruction," he said.

VIDEO: Brit Hume/Bill Kristol Slam Obama Video To Iran

Foxs News analysts Brit Hume and Bill Kristol objected to President Barack Obamas attempt to open a dialog with Iran this morning on Fox News Sunday.

Kristol called the video message "weak" and notes that Iran has once again taken notice of Obama's weakness.

"It's an embarrassment. It's a weak and embarrassing statement by the President of the United States," said Kristol.

Hume suggested that any overtures towards Iran should be backed up with threats.

"Condoleezza Rice said something to me last year. When she said it, I was surprised. She said almost no governments in the world practice diplomacy the way the United States does," Hume explained.

"We practice diplomacy always backed up by the possibility or even the threat of some forceful action, whether it be economic or whatever," said Hume.

"It appears that president Obama has joined the rest of the world in practicing the diplomacy of talk," he said.
