House Republicans are using images of the Pentagon burning on 9/11 and President Obama's "bow" to the Saudi leader in a video that accuses the president of making America less safe in his first 100 days.
But the new video has already created blowback from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus – whose meeting with Obama is also featured in the video – with one member of the caucus claiming use of the image is “racist.”
The video is part of a new offensive by Republicans, who are in the midst of a party rebranding effort, to question the Obama administration's national security policies.
“What are Democrats doing to keep us safe,” Republicans ask in the video, titled “Day 101,” released Thursday morning.
Complete with dreary background music, the video challenges Obama on his decision to close Guantanamo Bay and release memos detailing the Bush administration’s policies on torture. The video also shows Obama's handshake with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, airs a bunch of headlines and news clips about CIA interrogations and flashes of terrorist training videos.
The image of the Pentagon in flames on 9/11 appears for just an instant at 1:14 in the video, and it’s spliced with images of flag burning protesters and other violent footage from the Middle East. The video also flashes on a still photo of Obama meeting with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus – and the image is spliced in between the Chavez handshake and the flag burning.
Noticing this shot, the CHC sent a vehement statement to POLITICO this afternoon.
“The video posted on Congressman John Boehner’s official website is a completely inappropriate message for the leader of the minority party to send to the American people,” said CHC Chairwoman Nydia Velazquez (D-N.Y.). “It’s disrespectful to the hard-working Latinos across the nation, serving in every sector of our economy and on our military’s front lines. The CHC demands an apology from the Minority Leader for this insensitivity and that the video be removed immediately.”
Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva, also a member of the CHC, was even more outraged: “It is not only inflammatory to the Latino community but the singling out of a groups for that
categorization is racist.”
House Minority Leader John Boehner defended the video today, saying it was perfectly fair game.
“What is the overarching strategy?” Boehner asked. “I’m trying to push the administration to describe what their overarching strategy is.”
And Boehner spokesman Michael Steel says the imagery was appropriate: “The events of Sept. 11 happened. Pretending they didn't won't make America any safer. And ignoring the facts would be even worse."

The group wants to train homeowners facing eviction on peaceful ways they can remain in their homes.
Derek Valcourt reports their actions are not without controversy.
Near Patterson Park, the padlock on the door and the sign in the window tell part of Donna Hanks foreclosure story.
"The mortgage went up $300 in one month," said Hanks, former homeowner.
She says the bank refused to modify her loan and foreclosed, kicking her out of the house in September. The community group ACORN calls Hanks a victim of predatory lending.
"This is our house now," said Louis Beverly, ACORN.
And on Thursday afternoon, they literally broke the foreclosure padlock right off the front door and then broke into the house, letting Hanks back in for the first time in months.
"We are actually trespassing, and so this is a way of civil disobedience to try to stay in the house," said Beverly. "Legally it's wrong, but
homesteading is the only means that she has left to stay in her house. And we feel as though this is the right thing to do at this particular time to save this family.
"Inside, there's spray paint on the walls and evidence that someone has possibly been remodeling.
The group says it was staging similar demonstrations in six other cities nationwide while urging a moratorium on foreclosures. They want that until President Obama's stimulus plan begins on March 4. The plan is designed to help threatened homeowners.
"As you all can see, Donna is reclaiming her home, and she's putting a lock on her door at this time," said Beverly.

The NY Post reported this week that Bush-hater and pugnacious anti-American Michael Moore. Moore's website implies that in a photograph of an American soldier carrying a wounded Iraqi girl, the girl was wounded by Americans, when in reality, she was wounded by Iraqi insurgents and the American had come to her rescue.

He has been embedded on numerous occasions with American and British troops in Iraq, most prominently a deployment with the 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment (Deuce Four) of the 25th Infantry Division in Mosul, Iraq that ended in September 2005. He continues to blog from Iraqi and Afghan towns and battlefields.

Last year, to illustrate one of his anti-administration bombasts, the portly polemicist posted on his michaelmoore.com Web site a heartbreaking photo from Iraq of an American soldier carrying the blood-spattered body of a child. The picture was snapped by acclaimed independent war correspondent Michael Yon, who has been very careful about how his images are distributed and goes out of his way to make sure they aren't used for demagogic diatribes.

We have not yet filed in court, but will very soon if Mr. Moore does not settle the matter immediately. The court paperwork takes time, though my attorney informed me that Mr. Moore’s attorney, after seven months of delay, called us late yesterday. Michael Moore’s attorney and mine, Mr. John Mason, are playing phone tag today.

Guardian is reporting some very frightening and dangerous news. It is becoming more lucid each day that Obama has no clue about foreign policy nor does he have a vested interest in protecting the American people.
The incoming Obama administration is prepared to abandon George Bush's doctrine of isolating Hamas by establishing a channel to the Islamist organisation, sources close to the transition team say.
The move to open contacts with Hamas, which could be initiated through the US intelligence services, would represent a definitive break with the Bush presidency's ostracising of the group. The state department has designated Hamas a terrorist organisation, and in 2006 Congress passed a law banning US financial aid to the group. The Guardian has spoken to three people with knowledge of the discussions in the Obama camp.
There is no talk of Obama approving direct diplomatic negotiations with Hamas early on, but he is being urged by advisers to initiate low-level or clandestine approaches, and there is growing recognition in Washington that the policy of ostracising Hamas is counter-productive. A tested course would be to start contacts through Hamas and the US intelligence services, similar to the secret process through which the US engaged with the PLO in the 1970s. Israel did not become aware of the contacts until much later.
Solid, serious appointees cannot overcome such a profound misunderstanding of the nature of the radical Islamist movement. At least overtures to Iran could proceed with the hope of communicating with the pro-American population suffering under the rule of the mullahs. There is zero evidence that Hamas can be reformed or that there is a large population beneath its iron rule that longs for its overthrow in Gaza.

In a story the paper ran earlier this year, Iseman was linked romantically with presidential candidate John McCain in 1999. The text of the suit is here (thank you Michael Calderone). Iseman's defamatory complaint has two bullet points--that the Times story communicated that she had exploited a relationship with McCain "to obtain favorable legislative outcomes for her clients"--a violation of professional and ethical norms. The second point is the paper's portrayal of the nature of her relationship with McCain (as "illicit and inappropriate") while she conducted business for clients before the committee chaired by McCain.
The Times says: "We fully stand behind the article. We continue to believe it to be true and accurate, and that we will prevail. As we said at the time, it was an important piece that raised questions about a presidential contender and the perception that he had been engaged in conflicts of interest."
Calderone reports Iseman's "said to have suffered mentally, emotionally, and in her health." He also notes that reporters at the Times "worked on the controversial lobbyist piece for months, and it was held up several times in the editorial process."

The Times actually published this piece of garbage! Publisher's are free to give book deals to whomever they choose. It's part of the American spirit to venture into any realm we choose. Who are Timothy Egan and the NY Times to be the arbiters of whom should be allowed to pen a book?
