Iran Test Fires Missile That Could Reach Israel; Defense Sec. Gates Leaves Door Open For Iran Diplomacy, Chides Cheney (Video)

Iran has test fired a missile which "could reach Israel". The Obama Team continues to naively believe that words and diplomacy can work with the Islamic Republic.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates appears on "State of the Union" to talk about the discovery of Iran's new nuclear facility.

Gates says: "The reality is, there is no military option that does anything more than buy time. The estimates are one to three years or so. And the only way you end up not having a nuclear-capable Iran is for the Iranian government to decide that their security is diminished by having those weapons, as opposed to strengthened." However, he adds: "I think there's still room left for diplomacy... The Iranians are in a very bad spot now, because of this deception."

Also, Gates, who says that they have been "watching" construction of the new nuke site "for quite some time," is asked by John King if former Vice President Dick Cheney was of the belief that that location was a target. "I'll just let his statement speak for itself," he replied.

Defense Secretary Robert "William" Gates appeared on the Today Show this morning to defend his boss.

Is that what this is all about? Obama doesn't what to rub his nose in GITMO's "taint"?

Gates did say GITMO is one of the finest prison's in the world.

Last I checked "William Gates" was busy with some company called Microsoft and Robert Gates was the "Secretary of War".

No wonder Obama's national security policy sucks.

Um...forgive me, but last I checked, we haven't had a "Secretary of War" since Kenneth Claiborne Royall served President Truman in 1947!

He says we can do nothing to stop North Korea from breaking international law in the next 10 days by firing a missile that is unlikely to be shot down by the U.S. or its allies.

This past weekend, Japan announced it was sending naval ships equipped with missile interceptors to its northern coast in anticipation of North Korea's planned long-range missile test.

Last week, while speaking to reporters during a visit to Mexico City, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned North Korea that firing a missile for any purpose would be a 'provocative act' that would have consequences.

Yesterday, Japan announced it was sending naval ships equipped with missile interceptors to its northern coast in anticipation of North Korea's planned long-range missile test.

Earlier this week, while speaking to reporters during a visit to Mexico City, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned North Korea that firing a missile for any purpose would be a 'provocative act' that would have consequences.

The United States can do nothing to stop North Korea from breaking international law in the next 10 days by firing a missile that is unlikely to be shot down by the U.S. or its allies, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Sunday.

Appearing on "FOX News Sunday," Gates said North Korea "probably will" fire the missile, prompting host Chris Wallace to ask: "And there's nothing we can do about it?"

"No," Gates answered, adding, "I would say we're not prepared to do anything about it."

Last week, Admiral Timothy Keating, commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific, said the U.S. is "fully prepared" to shoot down the missile. But Gates said such a response is unlikely.

"I think if we had an aberrant missile, one that was headed for Hawaii, that looked like it was headed for Hawaii or something like that, we might consider it," Gates said. "But I don't think we have any plans to do anything like that at this point."
